The Cameroonian canvas has been shaken for two days by a cartoon of the Actress Murielle Blanche produced by the satirical daily Popoli. A caricature that arouses anger and a lot of debate both within the local film industry and outside.
The team of the Cameroonian satirical newspaper Popoli surely hadn’t imagined that it would be at the heart of the controversy this weekend at the beginning of Chan 2021. In its January 16 edition, we discover a provocative caricature of the actress and producer Muriel Blanche juggling a football with her buttocks around her, in the same image, the footballer Samuel Eto’o and the governor of the Littoral region Samuel Ivaha Diboua admiring this performance of another kind. As if the image alone was not enough, a text is placed below the image. A text that is nor very glossy and visibly written on the basis of neighbourhood gossip and gossip. In reality, neither the caricature nor the text come as a surprise coming from this Newspaper, which has become a master in the art of shocking comments and daring caricatures, which fits well with its satirical editorial line. But in the film industry the pill was far too big to swallow this time. Many filmmakers, media men and women protested against the newspaper’s comments, which were considered sexist and degrading to the image of Muriel and women in general. None of them felt that the producer of the film Aline should complain with Popoli.
