“La Femme Anjola”, the new film by director Mildred Okwo will be released on 19 March 2021 in Nigeria. This much-anticipated psychological thriller stars the famous actress Rita Dominic.
It is certainly one of the most eagerly awaited films in Nigeria at the beginning of this year. La Femme Anjola will be released in Nigerian cinemas on 19 March 2020. This thriller, described as a neo-noir film, is directed by Mildred Okwo whose previous films – The Meeting (2012), Suru Lere (2016) – have been a great success both critically and publicly. With this new feature film, the director and producer intends to bring a new approach to Nollywood and African storytelling. And to give her work a new dimension, Mildred Okwo has once again chosen to feature the actress Rita Dominic in this film.
The genesis of La Femme Anjola dates back to 2015 when Mildred Okwo acquired the rights for the script written by Tunde Babalola. From that date on, the preparation work starts with the selection of the actors and the technical team. The film tells the story of a young and prosperous stockbroker. His life is turned upside down when he falls in love with a fatal woman married to a dangerous gangster. To play this fatal woman, the famous Nigerian actress Rita Dominic has been chosen. A role that suits her perfectly if we take into account the first images revealed by the trailer. She plays the fatal woman, a singer in a cabaret and wife of the gangster (the chief bandit as they say in the neighbourhood). At her side is Nonso Bassey, a Nigerian actor and singer in the role of the young trapped stockbroker. Next to them we will find other actors such as: Femi Jacobs, Mumbi Maina, Ego Boyo, Browny Igboegwu.
With her production company Audrey-Silva Company, Mildred decides to produce a film that makes a nod to the Hollywood Black films of the 40s and 50s but with a purely Nigerian identity. The film highlights a classic cinematic scheme, the hero, the villain and the fatal woman. A scheme that has proven itself and continues to work. Themes such as love, seduction, lies and betrayal can be found in the film. The public will have the opportunity to discover the film in theatres in Nigeria but also on certain video-on-demand platforms around the world.
