“Night of the Kings” by Ivorian director Philippe Lacôte has received the most prestigious award at the 35th edition of the Fribourg International Film Festival. For the second time in a row, the festival awarded its Grand Prix to an African film.

Night of the Kings continues to win awards and distinctions around the world. The film, a political and poetic fable from Côte d’Ivoire directed by Philippe Lacôte, was awarded the Grand Prix at the 35th edition of the Fribourg International Film Festival  a few days ago in Switzerland. La Nuit des Rois surprised us by its great originality. We liked the director’s viewpoint, which skilfully reflected African myths by placing them in a contemporary reality”, said the jury in awarding the prize, which comes with an envelope of 10,000 Swiss Francs. This award helps to establish the reputation of this film, which is now in its 10th consecutive week of theatrical release in Canada. A record for a film from the continent.

“Night of the Kings surprised us with its great originality. We liked the look of the director who skillfully reflected African myths by placing them in a contemporary reality.”

The film, which was the Ivorian representative in the race for the Oscars 2021, plunges us into the Ivorian prison world without seeking to take a stand or point the finger, but simply presenting a world, admittedly unknown to the general public, with its codes, with its laws, with its own humanity. An approach that we had already analyzed in a previous article on the film. In addition to its distribution in festivals and in certain theaters, the film is also available on streaming platforms such as Hulu (United States) and Crave (Canada).
