Black skin has always crystallized a lot of attention. Some people are fascinated by her for her “exotic” side or others hate her because of many stereotypes. Beverly Ayana, Nigerian actress has made a 1-hour documentary on the issue. A film made for the Netflix streaming platform. The film, released in 2019, tells the well-known story of its many African women who depigment their skin either because it doesn’t feel beautiful enough or because society considers it too dark.
Bervely Naya in directing this documentary in Nigeria also drew on her own story. She who was a victim of racism in her childhood in England. Through a series of interviews, the documentary takes us to these women who set out to change the color of their skin by depigmenting it through numerous processes. The film also gives the floor to experts to understand this phenomenon, measure its extent and assess the consequences of such practices.
