News : Three African films in official selection at the “Internationales Frauen Film Festival”
ShareTweetShareShare

Three films from the continent are part of the official selection of the Internationales Frauen Film Festival in Germany. These are the films “Buried” by Françoise Ellong, “The Man Who Sold His Skin” by Kaouther Ben Hania and “Souad” by Ayten Amin.

From June 15 to 20, 2021, the 37th edition of the Cologne International Woman’s Film Festival (Internationales Frauen Film Festival Cologne/Dortmund) will take place in Germany. An edition that will be held online due to the Covid 19 pandemic. It should be mentioned that in 2020 the festival could not be held precisely because of the pandemic. For this special edition, three African films are part of the official selection of nine films. Buried from the benino-cameroonian Françoise Ellong, The Man Who Sold His Skin from the tunisian Kaouther Ben Hania and Souad from egyptian Ayten Amin.

Buried

“Françoise Ellong’s film delivers a statement against the silence that the powerful institution of the church uses as a weapon to suppress the victims of abuse in the name of religion. The film also raises the question of the responsibility of all those who stay silent on the suffering of those affected – neighbours, relatives or those in charge at such institutions. It’s a fascinating vehicle that examines trauma, alternating between psychological thriller and chamber drama.” Internalionales Frauen Film Festival

The Man Who Sold His Skin

“Director Kaouther Ben Hania has created a brilliant film with a cynical thread, about two worlds colliding: the world of the contemporary art trade and that of political refugees desperate to gain settled safety. The story is loosely inspired by the real-life case of Belgian artist Wim Delvoye who tattooed the back of Swiss man Tim Steiner and sold his ›work‹ (Tim, 2006). The film is a fascinating satire on what can actually be traded in our world and the loss of human dignity.” Internationales Frauen Film Festival

Souad

“The film Souad speaks for millions of post-revolutionary Egypt’s youth, who spend their most formative years in a political and ethical limbo. The national depression that hit Egypt after the economic crisis under Abd al-Fattah as-Sisi in 2016 and the acute erosion of values by conservative political Islam – a fact not confined simply to the time since Mohamed Mursi came to power – gushes out in Souad in a uniquely authentic portrayal of latent hysteria that reflects the fragility of an entire country. Yet director Amin avoids indulging in the fatalism so prevalent in Egypt. Instead, she draws a second character out of the narrative: Rehab, Souad’s younger sister. The second part of the film sees us accompany the 13-year-old on her odyssey along Alexandria’s Mediterranean Sea, which will eventually resolve the conflict.” Internationales Frauen Film Festival
