The year 2021 has been very dynamic in terms of film productions in Cameroon. Besides the many film releases this year, several other films have also been shot and will be released in 2022 to the delight of moviegoers. A quick tour of these films which will be released next year.
If 2020 was a difficult year because of the global Covid19 pandemic, it was nonetheless a full year for several Cameroonian filmmakers if we refer to the various film releases. 2021 marked the resumption at full speed of cultural and cinematographic activities in Cameroon and the second half of the year was marked by an abundant production. In 6 months, no less than 5 feature films have been shot. The release of these films, which explore various and sometimes unexplored genres, is expected in the year 2022.
Love Trap by Cosson Chinepoh
A few months ago we wrote an article on the presence of the model Valérie Ayena in this feature film directed by Cosson Chinepoh. On December 19, the Love Trap trailer was posted on social networks, revealing some parts of the plot of this film which is intended to be a mixture of romance, drama and thriller. The trailer has been posted without any indication of a release date yet. Arrived almost at the end of the year, it is obvious that the film will be released in 2022. The cast of this film produced by Maclean Ngwimetoh will include, among others: Marcelle Kuetche, Stephanie Tum, Epule Jeffrey, Otia Vitalis, Nsang Bilong, Nkanya Nkwai.
L’accord de Frank Thierry Lea Malle
Filmmaker Frank Thierry Lea Malle‘s second feature film after Innocent (e) [2019], the filming of L’Accord took place during the month of August in the city of Yaoundé. The film, which brings together two families from different social classes in the Cameroonian political capital, is a continuation of the social films that have become the hallmark of the director and his production company Inception Arts and Com. The director and producer once again calls on the German director of photography Nathalie Push to ensure the photography of his film. In the cast of L’Accord, which could be released in the first quarter of 2022: Jakin Touwole, Vanessa Ambassa, Reine Mpouadina, Moussa Sindjah, Thérèse Ngono, Anthony Ndeuch, Ebenzer Kepombia.
KANKAN de Joseph Akama
KANKAN is part of a genre very little exploited in Cameroon: the Biopic. For his first feature film, Joseph Akama decides to take an unexplored path by making a film tribute to the famous Cameroonian humorist of late memory Dieudonné Afana better known under the pseudonym Jean Miché Kankan. The film produced by Claye Edou and his company Cledley Productions brings together a cast of choice with in the role of Dieudonné Afana a.k.a Jean Miché Kankan, Landry Nguetsa, actor and theater director very little known in the cinema. We will find on the bill, Assala Kofanne, Manoella Nguetse, Ashan Nguetse, Felicité Asseh, Eshu Tamwa and many others. It was through a Facebook post from the producer that the public was made aware of the end of the filming of KANKAN which took place in the cities of Yaoundé and Mbankomo for 1 month.
The film will be one of the highly anticipated films in 2022 because it addresses the life of a major and essential figure in humor in Cameroon and in French-speaking Africa.
Nganù de Kang Quintus
After having monopolized the attention with Fishersman’s Diary of which he was the producer and the main actor, the bubbling Kang Quintus is back with Nganù. This time, in addition to the production and the main role he plays, he is also the director. And even if we don’t know much about the plot of the film, Nganù will surely be one of the most anticipated films of 2022 for several reasons. One of the biggest reasons being the ability of its director / actor / producer to create a buzz around the film. He proclaimed loud and clear that he was: the first Cameroonian director to direct a Hollywood’s actor, the first to have paid 10 million to the comedian Cabral Nanjip to cut his hair, the first Cameroonian to finish his shooting on a Friday in December … just that! Obviously these are statements to be taken with a grain of salt but which succeed in creating interest around the film in view of the many reactions they arouse.
The other reason why the film will also be eagerly awaited is its casting. We find there: Hakeem Kae-Kazim, Murielle Blanche, Eshu Tamwa, Godisz Fungwa, Alenne Menget. Will Nganù be the first film to be released in 2022? Roll on the film!
The Planter’s Plantation de Eystein Young Jr
Another film that we must see in 2022, The Planter’s Plantation directed by Eystein Young Jr. The team behind the film offers a period film and takes us to the city of Isambile in 1960. A big artistic challenge to recreate the universe of that time. In the main role we will find the Nigerian actor: Nkem Owoh. If the talent and notoriety of this actor is not at all questionable, one can still wonder why all the films produced in recent years in the English-speaking Cameroonian part systematically use Nigerian actors. Is the cinema on the other side of the Moungo turning into Nollywood bis? Never mind the first images of the film signed by the director of photography Lumière Sembène already makes you want to see the film. No release date is known yet. We will find alongside Nkem Owoh, Stephanie Tum, Nimo Loveline, Loic Sumfor, Alejandro Powers, Brawn Brawnish, Afahnyuy Blessing …
Macarena The Dancing Girl de Cosson Chinepoh
Cosson Chinepoh will certainly be the most prolific director of 2022 with 2 films to be released in the same year. With Macarena The Dancing Girl, the director offers himself a luxury cast and very Nollywood oriented. We note the presence of Ramsey Nouah, Juliet Ibrahim, Epule Jeffrey, Stephanie Tum, Anthony Ndeuch. No information is yet available on the plot of this film produced by Solange Ojong. But if we rely solely on the title we can say that the story will surely revolve around a dancer!
Kuvah de Max Ngassa
Another film to see next year, Kuvah “Legend of the Sea” directed by Max Ngassa. the filming of the film took place in the town of Tiko bringing together the cast: comedian and tv presenter TCHOP TCHOP, Noelle Kenmoe, Godisz Fungwa, Alenne Menget and Syndy Emade in the main role. The film is produced by Syndy Emade and his company Blue Rain Entertainment. If the plot of the film is not yet known, the shooting photos available on social networks already give us the opportunity to speculate on the subject that the film will address.
2022 will therefore see no less than 7 feature films released in Cameroon. A fact that testifies to the vitality and growth of the local film industry. Roll on 2022 in front of the big screen!
