The American streaming giant signed a partnership with the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) in March to fund South African films.
On 18 March, the National Film and Video Foundation of South Africa (NFVF) proudly announced the signing of a partnership with Netflix to fund South African films. The partnership will see the establishment of a R28 million ($1915,000) fund to be co-funded by the two organisations: R14 million from Netflix and R14 million from the NFVF. This will support local film production. It should be recalled that the Covid19 pandemic has severely affected the South African film industry. The films that will benefit from this support will be premiered on Netflix.
The funding will be divided into two streams:
Stream 1 : reserved for emerging filmmakers, 4 feature films will each receive a 4 million Rand ($273,677) package
Stream 2 : reserved for emerging filmmakers, 4 feature films will each receive a 4 million Rand ($273,677) package
“We are delighted as NFVF to partner with Netflix and appreciate their investment in local content. Integrating digital platforms into our traditional processes can only benefit the industry further. We hope this is just the beginning of what will undoubtedly be a long and fruitful relationship,”said Makhosazana Khanyile, NFVF Director.
