Taken from a true story, Oloture, broadcast since October 2 on Netflix, takes us to the heart of human trafficking in Nigeria.
On October 2, Netflix posted the film Oloture, a film straight from Nollywood, which takes us into the dark and perverse world of prostitution and human trafficking in Nigeria. The movie, directed by Kenneth Gyang, is inspired from the true story of a journalist, Tobore Ovuorie, who went undercover to unravel the existence of the brutal and dangerous world of human trafficking in Nigeria.
In 2013 Tobore Ovuorie infiltrates a network of sexual exploitation under the name of Oghogo, after several months of infiltration, recording testimonies and notes, she plublishes her report on the mafia and sex trafficking on the platform Prenium Times. The movie inspired by this strory transposes to the screen all these incredible adventures by adding some elements to serve the narration. The main role, the infiltrated journalist (Oloture), is played by Sharon Ooja.
And the result is a movie constructed as thriller and drama which take us deeply in a wolrd with no limit. Young women go through hardships and brutality. Many of them are recuited to become sex workers and exploted overseas. A hidden world where where women are real objects for the bosses of the mafia.
“After numerous digging of information and research on human trafficking, i was shocked when i came across the numbers and saw how much was made from human trafficking,” said Mo Abudu executive producer of Oloture to CNN.
Human Trafficking is a 150 billion dollar industry, and two-third of this figure is generated from sexual exploitation, according to a 2014 report by International Labour Organization. Tens of thousands of Nigerians are trafficked, uncommonly yearly from Edo state (South of Nigeria) which has become one of Africa’s departure points for irregular migration. The International Organization for Immigration (IMO) estimates over 91% of people trafficked are women and they are usually exploited and abused sexually.
The film, shot in 27 days at the end of 2018, is a great success on Netflix. Sharon Ooja, Beverly Osu, Ada Ameh, Omowumi Dada, Blossom Chukwujekwu and the others actors gives, through their realistic performance, a real moment of emotions to the spectators.
You can watch the film now on Netflix.
