Like every February 14, the world celebrates Love. And if for Valentine’s Day this year you give yourself a nice romantic cinema session. Your magazine offers you a selection of 7 romantic African films to watch with Her or Him!

1- The Wedding Party

First on our list, the movie The Wedding Party. It is certainly one of the most famous Nollywood movies in the world. Released in 2016 and directed in Lagos by Kemi Adetiba, this romantic comedy takes us into Dunny and Dozie’s wedding preparations which turn into a real nightmare when the couple’s parents, their exes and surprise guests decide to orient the things as they please. The Wedding Party written by Mo Abudu, also producer, was selected at the prestigious Torronto International Film Festival and includes in the cast: Adesua Etomi, Banky Wellington, Sola Sobowale, Zeinab Balogun. The film ranked two weeks after its release at the top of the Nigerian box office, outranking American blockbusters. The film is available on Netflix. You will have a great time watching this movie.

2- Two Weeks in Lagos

Two Weeks in Lagos is a small Nigerian romantic comedy produced outside the Nollywood circuit. The film directed by Kathryn Faseghaa offers a pleasant moment of relaxation. Although the scenario is somewhat far-fetched and the dialogues too, we nevertheless have a good time in front of this film which mixes romance and message of evangelization. In the cast, Mawuli Gavor, Beverly Naya, Joke Silva, Jide Kosoko, Toyin Abraham Okey Uzoeshi. The film was nominated at the African Movie Academy Awards in the Best Film by an non based african category. The film is available on Netflix.

3-Saving Mbango

Saving Mbango is a Cameroonian romantic drama directed by Nkanya Nkwai. The film is a real distillation of emotion that takes us on a tumultuous love story between John (Godisz Fungwa) and Mbango (Laura Onyama) in the small village of Mondoni in South West Cameroon. The film produced by Stéphanie Tum is available on Amazon. It’s a must-see movie!

4- Cook Off

Zimbabwe entered the Netflix platform thanks to Cook Off directed by Thomas Brickhill. A warm romantic comedy carried by actress Tendaiishe Chitima. The film, shot on a micro budget and released in 2017, received favorable critical acclaim at several festivals around the world. The film tells the story of Anusu, a single mother who finds love during a televised cooking competition.

5- Mrs Right Guy

Mrs Right Guy is a South African romantic comedy released in June 2016. The film directed by Adze Ugah tells the story of Gugu, a young woman who was abandoned by her husband in a hotel during their honeymoon. She therefore decides to push back all the men who approach her. But she ends up meeting a man who will change her view of men. In the main role we find the actress Dineo Moeketsi. The film is available on Netflix and Showmax.

6- Namaste Wahala

The title of the film already announces the colors. Namaste Wahala (Welcome Problems) is an Indian-Nigerian romantic comedy directed by Hamisha Daryani Ahuj and released in 2020. The cast includes Ini Dima-Okojie, Ruslaan Mumtaz and also Richard Mofe-Damijo. It is a love story between an Indian and a Nigerian that becomes almost impossible when the parents get involved claiming to want to perpetuate their cultures. The film is available on Netflix.

7- Fine Wine

Fine Wine is a 2021 Nigerian romantic comedy film directed by Seyi Babatope. In the cast of this film we find; Richard Mofe-Damijo, Ego Nwosu, Zainab Balogun, Nse Ikpe-Etim.
