On 15 November, the BBC Africa channel unveiled the documentary ”The Baby Stealers”. A film made during one year and which follows the ferocious circuit of selling babies in Kenya. The documentary was a bomb in this East African country and pushed the authorities to open investigations.
The title of this documentary could hint at a quirky Hollywood story, but no, it is the title of the very serious BBC Africa documentary made over a year in Nairobi, Kenya. For a year the journalists of the English channel have infiltrated the circuit of baby trafficking in Kenya. A flourishing and growing traffic that plunges families into disarray. 600 euros is the price for which a baby can be sold on the black market. Destinations of these babies become commodities of wealthy families who can’t manage to have children or disturbed individuals who want to make sacrifices.
The BBC Africa team managed to film several traffickers even in public hospitals. As soon as this documentary was published, the Kenyan authorities undertook to prosecute several people involved in these thefts, including state doctors who were filmed during the shooting of the documentary as reported by our colleagues from Courrier International.
What is the situation in your country? Is baby trafficking also existing? Are films being made on this subject?
